Javier Garza Ramos, Knight International Journalism Fellow, Mexico

Javier Garza Ramos, is a Knight International Journalism Fellow, from Mexico and serves as a special advisor to the World Editors Forum on journalists’ safety. He is currently partnering with media organizations and universities to enhance crowd-sourcing maps to track journalists under attack.

Garza is a former Deputy Editorial Director of daily Mexican paper El Siglo de Torreón. He holds a degree in Communications from the Ibero-American University of Santa Fe and a Masters in journalism from the University of Texas. He began his career as a reporter at the newspaper Reforma, which he later edited. He is also a former editor of Rumbo de Austin, as well as a frequent collaborator at Radio Formula, W Radio and the portal “Animal Político”. He has lectured on violence against the media at the Universities of Texas, California and Georgia, the Inter American Press Association, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, ARTICLE 19, the Norwegian Institute of Journalism and the Union of Russian Journalists. His articles on the subject have appeared in magazines in Mexico and United States. As a Knight Fellow, Garza is currently developing courses and workshops on digital security for journalists and bloggers in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America.
