Lisa Blakeway

Executive Director, Vuselela Media, South Africa

She is a two-time top winner and now a judge of the WAN-IFRA World Young Reader Prize and an advisor on youth engagement actions. Vuselela Media's  latest project ,  “B MEdia Ys” with the European Journalism Centre, teaches young people how to use their mobile phones to tell their stories and document the issues that affect them and their communities. Formerly, she directed the Learning Channel, the leading provider of curriculum-based print material for schools for the three largest media houses in South Africa – Times Media Limited, Independent Newspapers and Media 24 - and education broadcasts for SABC 1, which has the largest TV footprint in South Africa. She won her first World Young Reader Prize while at The Sunday Times as founding editor of ReadRIGHT, a ground-breaking supplement that provided rural classes with the only learning materials available to students. She won again in 2002 for that paper's "A Star in You" NIE programme that focused on building character in fun and effective ways.
