Managing Director, The New York Times, China

Since November 2011, Craig S. Smith has been the managing director of The New York Times’s China operation. Craig spent 20 years as a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, including assignments in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Paris. He left the Times in 2008 to spend three years as senior vice president of media for Pacific Century Holdings, the investment holding company of Richard Li, a major media investor in Asia.

Mr. Smith has written from more than 40 countries and has extensive experience in China where he won the The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies-Novartis Award for Excellence in International Journalism and was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

Craig graduated Columbia University with a BA in English and Philosophy in 1979. In 1987, he graduated with an MS from the Columbia University School of Journalism. Currently based in Hong Kong, he is married with two children.
